From October 16th to October 17th, 2019, the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion took place in Shanghai, China. The conference brought together global health leaders, scholars and practitioners to discuss critical issues that affect health promotion and exchange ideas on how to better develop health promotion strategies. This year’s conference focused on exploring the future of Health Promotion, with discussions ranging from the definition of Health to the different aspects of health promotion. In this article, we will summarize the key takeaways of the conference.

Health is a human right, Universal Health Coverage is the key

One of the key themes of the conference was the importance of universal health coverage (UHC) as a way of promoting health. Speakers highlighted that achieving UHC is not only a moral imperative, but also a practical way of promoting health. According to the World Health Organization, UHC means that all people have access to quality health services without having to suffer financial hardship. Achieving UHC requires addressing the social determinants of health, strengthening health systems, and empowering communities.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a major public health concern

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases, are responsible for approximately 70% of global deaths, with low- and middle-income countries being disproportionately affected. During the conference, experts highlighted the need for multisectoral action to prevent and control NCDs. Some suggested that the approach should be integrated into the universal health coverage agenda to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their socio-economic status, has access to preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.

The role of technology in health promotion

Another key takeaway from the conference was the potential of technology to transform health promotion. Experts emphasised that digital technology has the potential to facilitate access to health information, promote health behaviour change, and improve health outcomes. Examples of such technologies include telemedicine, mobile health applications, and digital health records.

Community participation is critical for successful health promotion

The conference underscored the importance of community participation in health promotion. Experts discussed the importance of involving communities in designing and implementing health promotion interventions. They also highlighted the crucial role of community health workers in translating health promotion messages into action at the local level. The speakers emphasised that health promotion must be grounded in a participatory approach that recognises the diversity of communities.

In conclusion, the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion reaffirmed the importance of health promotion as a key driver of sustainable development. The conference provided a platform for global health leaders, scholars and practitioners to exchange ideas and chart a way forward for health promotion. The conference highlighted the need for multisectoral action, community participation, and innovative technologies to drive health promotion. Achieving universal health coverage, preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases and improving global health literacy will be among the top priorities of the health promotion community in the coming years.
