Origins of Artificial Intelligence

One of the earliest documented references to machines created to mimic human intelligence can be traced back to ancient Greece in 300 BC. Greek mathematician Archytas created a wooden pigeon that could fly like a real bird, which could be considered a primitive form of a robot.

Fast forward to the 19th century, and Charles Babbage, a British mathematician, designed the first programmable mechanical computer. Even though Babbage’s machine wasn’t built during his lifetime, his concepts formed the foundation of modern computers.

In the early 20th century, Alan Turing, a British mathematician, is sometimes referred to as the father of AI. He developed the Turing Test, a measure of a machine’s ability to display intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

Evolution of Artificial Intelligence

During the 1950s and ’60s, computer scientists and AI researchers began to create programs that could mimic the reasoning processes of humans. One such program was the General Problem Solver by Allan Newell and Herbert Simon. This program could solve a range of complex problems by using a set of logical rules.

The 1970s and ’80s saw the rise of expert systems or knowledge-based systems. These were computer programs that could solve problems within a specific domain by reasoning through a set of pre-established rules. The most famous example of an expert system was MYCIN, a system created to diagnose and treat infectious diseases.

In the 1990s and beyond, AI has expanded beyond rule-based systems and expert systems. Machine learning and deep learning have emerged, enabling systems to learn from data through experience instead of relying solely on pre-established rules.
