Volume:

This is also made possible by social media platforms, cloud computing, and other online applications which have created a wealth of data available. For example, studies have shown that over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated daily. This volume of data is growing at an unpredictable rate, and it can be a challenge to manage and process it.

Velocity:

The velocity of data refers to the speed at which data is created and processed. In today’s era, new data is produced in real-time and is instantaneous. Hence, businesses and individuals must handle data processing at a high velocity to extract meaningful insights from it. Existing business intelligence tools are no longer enough for handling the level and speed of data being generated today. Streamlining and processing large volumes of data accurately at high speed are the needs of the hour. Algorithms and parallel processing are the most common approaches to meet this need.

Variety:

Variety refers to the diversity of data types including structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. Structured data follows a particular format and is stored in relational databases such as financial records and transaction data. Semi-structured data is data that does not conform to any specific format but is still identifiable, such as emails and presentation slides. Unstructured data is data that does not have a defined structure, which includes multimedia files, sensor data, and social media activity. Businesses need integrated platforms for data-driven decision-making, which can handle data diversity, and provide feedback with the utmost reliability.
