Exploring the Complex Character of Makoto Persona
The Introduction
One of the most complex and well-written characters in the Persona series is Makoto, from Persona 5. She is a student council president who is strong-willed, intelligent, and has a rigid sense of justice. However, as the game unfolds, we begin to see a more vulnerable side to her character, making her one of the most complex and popular characters in the Persona series.
The Beginning of Makoto’s Storyline
Makoto’s character is first introduced when the Phantom Thieves attempt to steal her heart. She initially comes across as a no-nonsense character, unwilling to listen to anyone who she deems as having a lesser understanding of how things should be. However, we soon learn that her sense of justice is not just an ideological stand, but something that stems from her past.
Makoto’s Past
Makoto had a strong, successful, and deeply respected older sister who took pride in her work as a police commissioner. She wanted Makoto to follow in her footsteps, but Makoto had different aspirations. Makoto’s sister died in the line of duty, and this caused Makoto to feel that her own aspirations did not matter. She starts to feel guilty about wanting to pursue her own dreams of being a lawyer and sees that following her sister’s path is the only way to do “the right thing.”
Makoto’s Growth as a Character
As the story progresses, Makoto is forced to confront her feelings of guilt and inadequacy. She eventually realizes that living up to her sister’s memory is not the same as living for herself. This realization comes when she hears the confession of a teacher at her school who was being blackmailed. He resigned from his job instead of seeking help because he had seen his best friend’s career end because of a similar scandal.
Makoto’s Role in the Game’s Plot
Makoto’s character contributes heavily to the game’s plot. Her strength in being a confident and capable character helps the group to get through some of the trickier situations. She provides advice and leadership in the group, most notably when they are trying to figure out how to safely remove Kamoshida’s distorted desires during the first palace heist.
The Conclusion
Makoto’s complexity as a character makes her a fan favorite in the Persona series. She has a strong will and sense of justice, but also a more vulnerable side that makes her relatable. Her story of coming to terms with her own dreams and aspirations is one that many players can connect to, making her an incredibly impactful and inspiring figure in the game.
