Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a term thrown around so much these days that it’s hard to not know what it means. It has become a buzzword that everyone is trying to work with or trying to understand how it works. But what is Artificial Intelligence actually? And how does it work? Let’s explore the basics.

AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. It is the branch of computer science that deals with creating intelligent machines that can perform tasks that traditionally require human intelligence, including visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.

To understand how AI works, we need to discuss its subfields. One of them is Machine Learning (ML); it is a type of AI that allows machines to learn and improve from experience. The essence of ML is that a machine learns by itself; it is not programmed to learn anything specifically. It utilizes the data fed into it to develop models that can recognize patterns and make predictions based on that information. Image and voice recognition on your phone and other computer tasks are examples of ML that you experience in your everyday life.

Another subfield of AI is deep learning. It is an artificial neural network that mimics the workings of the human brain to execute complicated tasks effectively, such as natural language processing, image recognition, and decision-making. Deep learning works using layers of artificial neurons, each one receiving data from the previous neural input. The neural inputs are then processed, and the result is output as the final layer of neural input.

AI is also found in Robotics, which are machines programmed to operate automatically. Robots consist of sensors, processors, and actuators; the sensors detect changes in their environment, the processors analyze the information received by the sensors, and the actuators are the components that perform the required actions. Robotics has revolutionized manufacturing and other industries and has recently been used effectively during the pandemic.

In conclusion, AI is a vast field with many different techniques, subfields, and applications. It is evolving rapidly and has enormous potential, able to have a significant impact on lifestyles and conditions. Additionally, AI technology can provide enormous benefits to society such as better medical diagnosis and care, improved communication, better manufacturing, greater efficiency and effectiveness, and less harmful environmental practices. Knowing the basics of Artificial Intelligence is only the beginning of an exciting journey of understanding.
