As humans, we all come from different backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions, yet we share some fundamental aspects of our behavior and social institutions that define us as a species. These universal traits or characteristics that exist across different cultures and societies are known as Cultural Universals. Anthropologists have categorized them into seven main domains that encompass the building blocks of human social life.

1. Language and Communication: Humans communicate using spoken, written, or signed languages that are unique to each culture. Language enables us to transfer knowledge, express emotions, and create symbols that reflect our shared beliefs and values.

2. Family and Kinship: The family is a fundamental unit of society that transcends cultural boundaries. It is where we learn social norms, roles, and responsibilities, and where we find love, support, and identity.

3. Religion and Beliefs: Humans are transcendent beings, and throughout history, we have searched for meaning and purpose beyond our physical existence. Religion and beliefs play a crucial role in shaping our worldview, ethical values, and rituals.

4. Art and Aesthetics: Humans have a natural desire to express themselves creatively and appreciate beauty. Art is a reflection of our culture, history, and identity and encompasses various forms such as music, literature, visual arts, dance, and theater.

5. Economy and Technology: Humans have devised ways to organize themselves to produce goods and services and to exchange them for other desired goods and services. Technology has played a critical role in shaping our economy and way of life, from the invention of the wheel to the creation of the internet.

6. Politics and social control: Humans have created complex governing systems to regulate social behavior and maintain order in society. Politics and social control involve the exercise of power, authority, and decision-making.

7. Education and Socialization: Humans are born with the capacity to learn and adapt to their surroundings. Education and socialization are essential components of human development, providing us with the skills, knowledge, and moral values necessary to function in society.

Despite the variations in cultural expressions and beliefs around the world, these cultural universals provide us with a framework for understanding the shared patterns and behaviors that define our humanity. Understanding these universals can also help us appreciate and respect cultural diversity, as well as identify areas of common ground to build mutual understanding and cooperation.
