Exploring My Cultural Identity: What Cultural Traditions Do I Practice?

For many individuals, cultural identity plays a significant role in how they view themselves and others around them. Cultures can bring people together, shape their traditions, and ultimately, offer a sense of belonging. Growing up in a multicultural society, I have had the opportunity to explore and learn about various cultural traditions that have impacted my life. In this blog article, I will be discussing the cultural traditions that I practice and how they have shaped my identity.

Language and Communication

One of the most fundamental aspects of culture is language. My parents were born and raised in Korea, so my first language was Korean before I learned English. Speaking two languages at a young age has been a part of my cultural identity. This helped me appreciate the importance of language and how it shapes one’s worldview. Additionally, understanding both languages helped me communicate better with my family and those within the Korean community.

Traditions Around Food

Another cultural tradition that has impacted me greatly is food. Korean cuisine is known for its unique flavors and healthy ingredients. Growing up, my family had traditional Korean dishes such as kimchi, bulgogi, and bibimbap. We would frequently have family meals that consisted of rice, soup, and various Korean side dishes called banchan. As I grew older, I started to appreciate the nutritional benefits and cultural significance behind Korean cuisine. I would often cook Korean dishes to share and celebrate my culture with friends, which allowed me to feel more connected to my cultural identity.

Celebrating Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year, also known as Seollal, is a traditional Korean holiday that is celebrated in January or February. It’s a time to honor ancestors, spend time with family, and welcome the new year. As an adult, I’ve continued to celebrate Lunar New Year by preparing traditional foods, wearing traditional clothing, and spending time with family. Lunar New Year reminds me of my cultural heritage and allows me to connect with my family and community.

Conclusion

Exploring my cultural identity has helped me appreciate the diverse cultural traditions that exist in the world. From language to cuisine and holidays, my cultural identity has shaped who I am today. It’s essential to maintain and embrace one’s cultural traditions as they bring meaning and a sense of belonging. By celebrating my culture, I can share it with others and promote cultural understanding and awareness.
