Examining the Disturbing History of Slave Artifacts

In addition, the collar could be attached to a chain, allowing the slave to be easily controlled by their owner.

Another common slave artifact was the slave mask. Made of metal or leather, these masks were designed to cover the face of the enslaved person. They had small openings for the eyes and mouth, but the overall effect was to dehumanize the individual. This served to reinforce the owner’s power and control over their property.

Other slave artifacts included branding irons, leg irons, and whips. Each of these instruments were designed to cause pain and suffering, and were used to maintain the dominance of the slave owner over the enslaved person.
