Embracing Independence: My Solo Travel Experience as a Woman in Colombia

As a woman, traveling alone can be a daunting prospect. Nevertheless, solo travel can give you a unique sense of accomplishment and independence. Colombia has long been a popular destination, with its rich culture, friendly locals, and stunning landscapes. I recently embarked on a solo trip to Colombia and wanted to share my experience.

Getting Prepared: What to Know Before You Go

Before embarking on a solo trip, it’s essential to research your destination thoroughly. Colombia has a reputation for being dangerous, but much has changed in recent years. It’s essential to keep up to date on any travel warnings and be aware of your surroundings. Ensure you have sufficient health insurance to cover any eventualities.

Arriving in Bogotá

I started my journey in Bogota, Colombia’s capital. I felt strangely at ease as I explored the city’s streets, taking in the historic architecture and contemporary art installations. One of the best decisions I made was to join a free walking tour, led by locals who gave me insight into the city’s history, food, and customs.

Exploring the Coffee Region

My next stop was the coffee region, known for its lush green hills and world-renowned coffee. I had pre-booked a hostel in Salento, a charming town known for its colorful architecture and easy access to the surrounding countryside. I spent my days hiking in the hills, learning about the coffee-making process, and enjoying the local cuisine.

Making Friends and Staying Safe

One of the highlights of my trip was the people I met along the way. I stayed in hostels and spent time in local cafes and restaurants, where I struck up conversations with other travelers and locals. Many of them had great advice on what to do and see, and I even made a few friends that joined me on some of my adventures.

Despite feeling safe during most of my trip, there were a few instances where I took extra precautions. I always made sure to let someone know where I was going and when I expected to return, and never walked alone at night.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, my solo travel experience in Colombia was one of the most empowering and enriching experiences of my life. It gave me a sense of independence and self-reliance that I didn’t know I had. With proper preparation and common sense, solo travel is an excellent way to explore a new country and discover oneself. Colombia is a unique and unforgettable travel destination that I hope to visit again soon.
