Discovering Jordan: My Solo Travel Adventure
Jordan is a country that is relatively unknown to most travelers, but it is brimming with culture, history, and natural treasures that are worth exploring. I recently embarked on a solo travel adventure to Jordan, and I was amazed by the hospitality of the locals, the ancient ruins, and the breathtaking landscapes.

Getting there
I flew into Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, which is well-connected to most major cities in the world. Once I arrived, I hired a car and drove to Petra, which is about a two-hour drive from Amman. Driving in Jordan can be intimidating, but the roads are generally in good condition, and there are plenty of signs to guide travelers. Alternatively, there are also buses and taxis available to get around the country.
The sights
Petra is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Jordan and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient city is carved out of rock and is believed to have been inhabited as early as 7,000 BC. The most famous monument in Petra is the Treasury, which was featured in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. However, there is much more to Petra than just the Treasury, and visitors can easily spend a day or two exploring the site.
Another must-see destination in Jordan is Wadi Rum, which is a desert valley that is home to some of the most beautiful rock formations in the world. Wadi Rum has been featured in several movies, including The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia. Visitors can explore the desert on foot, by camel, or by Jeep tour, and there are several campsites in the area where travelers can spend the night.
For history buffs, Jordan is also home to several ancient ruins, including Jerash and Umm Qais. Both sites are well-preserved and offer a glimpse into the country’s rich history.
The people
One of the things that struck me most about Jordan was the kindness of the locals. From the hotel staff to the street vendors, everyone I encountered was welcoming and eager to share their culture with me. Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country, which may intimidate some travelers, but I found that the locals were respectful of my beliefs, and I never felt unsafe during my trip.
