He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, seeking work and better opportunities.

In Cleveland, he worked for a clothing manufacturer, where he met a German mechanic who taught him about sewing machines and repairing them. This led to Morgan opening his own clothing repair and tailoring business, which he eventually sold to start a hat-making business. During his time as a hat maker, he invented a new kind of sewing machine and sold it to other companies, which became the foundation for his innovative career.

The Gas Mask

Perhaps Morgan’s most famous invention is the gas mask, which he developed in response to a 1916 explosion in Cleveland’s Tunnel River. Morgan and his brother were hired to rescue workers trapped inside the tunnel, but they quickly realized that the thick smoke made breathing almost impossible.

The inspiration for the gas mask came when Morgan saw a firefighter using a solution of water and sodium hydroxide to neutralize smoke in a burning building. Morgan realized that if he soaked a piece of cloth in the solution and put it over his face, he could breathe in the harmful fumes without inhaling the toxins, thus filtering out noxious gases and allowing him to breathe more easily.

Morgan’s invention was later adapted by the U.S. Army during World War I and eventually became a standard piece of equipment in the military and industrial professions.

The Traffic Signal

The gas mask was not Morgan’s only invention, however. In 1923, he also invented what we now know as the traffic signal. Before the invention of the traffic signal, cities would rely on police officers to direct traffic, using hand signals that could be difficult to understand and often led to confusion, and accidents.

Morgan’s traffic signal used a combination of red, yellow, and green lights to signal drivers when to stop, slow down, or go. It was an immediate success, reducing accidents and increasing safety on the road.
