In 1989, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee added 18 sites to the existing list of 12. These new sites were located all over the world and ranged from cultural and natural landmarks to mixed sites.
One of the most famous additions from that year is the the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in Japan. This site includes 17 structures, most of which are temples and shrines, that were built between the 10th and 17th centuries. These buildings represent the highest achievements of traditional Japanese architecture and include examples of early Buddhist and Shinto architecture.
Another notable inclusion was the Rock Drawings in Valcamonica in Italy. This site is a collection of over 140,000 rock engravings that date back as far as 8,000 BC. The art depicts the daily lives and customs of prehistoric humans and includes images of animals, weapons, and farming practices.
The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is another site that was added in 1989 and is the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. This reserve system includes seven marine protected areas and is home to a diverse range of marine life, including over 500 species of fish, 65 species of coral, and countless invertebrates.
Another mixed site added in 1989 is the St. Kilda archipelago, located off the coast of Scotland. These islands were inhabited for over 4,000 years and are home to a number of unique species, including the St. Kilda wren and the St. Kilda mouse. In addition to its natural significance, the island also has cultural value, as it was the last place in Scotland where the Gaelic language was spoken as a first language.
These are just a few examples of the amazing world heritage sites added in 1989. Each site has its own unique history and cultural significance, making them valuable not only to the country they are located in but to all of humanity. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve these incredible sites for future generations to enjoy and learn from.
