Cultural appropriation is a topic that has gathered momentum in the past few years. However, it is not something that is new as it has been happening since time immemorial. Cultural appropriation happens when people from one culture take something from another culture without permission, or they have not obtained the necessary consent or acknowledgment to use the elements of that culture.

Cultural appropriation comes in different forms, such as fashion, music, art, and even language. For instance, white artists taking inspiration from Black culture to create art or music pieces is a form of cultural appropriation. Similarly, a person dressing up as a Native American without understanding the significance of the attire is another form of cultural appropriation.

While many argue that cultural appropriation is a harmless exchange of ideas, the truth is that it can be harmful. It can perpetuate stereotypes and take away from the cultural origin, making it difficult for the people of that culture to capitalize on the very things that make them unique. Cultural appropriation allows people from dominant cultures to take elements of cultures from oppressed or marginalized communities and claim them as their own. This, in turn, can lead to a loss of identity for these cultures and lead to a whitewashing of their history.

However, it is important to point out that not all cultural sharing can be considered cultural appropriation. For instance, sharing cultural food or educating oneself about a culture while showing respect is not cultural appropriation. It only becomes an issue when it is done for personal gain or when it takes away from the significance of the culture.

In conclusion, cultural appropriation can be a complex and sensitive issue. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution to this problem, it is essential to be mindful of the cultural significance of things when you are taking inspiration from or borrowing elements of a culture. Ultimately, the goal is to continue to appreciate and learn about different cultures while showing respect for their history and traditions.
