Child Language Acquisition: How Do We Learn to Speak?

The ability to acquire language is one of the most impressive feats of human intelligence. Language is an essential tool of communication, and as such, it has an enormous impact on our lives. However, for most of us, learning a language comes quite naturally. But how do we actually acquire the language? Let’s explore.

Language development begins at birth, and in the first few months, infants can recognize the sounds of all languages. Infants coo or babble, practicing the sounds they hear around them, and trying to replicate them. It’s essential to note that this babbling is not the baby attempting to communicate in language but is instead the practice of producing the sounds necessary to speak a particular language. For example, at six months, Japanese babies babble with the same stress pattern as Japanese adults and French babies babble with the same staccato rhythm of the French language.

Around the age of nine months, a child’s language comprehension begins to outpace their production, and they start to understand more words than they can communicate on their own. Still, they start to reproduce words and words combinations afterward.

Children’s language acquisition depends on several factors, such as brain development, maturation, and exposure to language. A child could learn more than one language simultaneously, so long as they receive consistent input to both languages.

There are generally four stages of language development that occur during childhood:

1. Babbling: Around six months, children begin to babble.

2. One-Word Stage: At around one year, children begin to use single words.

3. Two-Word Stage: Around age two, children begin to combine two words to make simple phrases, such as “Daddy gone” or “more juice.”

4. Sentences and Beyond: As the child gets older, their sentences get more complex, with the use of grammar becoming more accurate, and with vocabulary expanding with age.

Children’s language acquisition is deeply complex and, at the same time, fascinating to observe. It’s a testament to the abilities of the human mind, and it underscores the crucial importance of language to our lives.
