As an avid reader and writer, I often find myself seeking out new sources of literary inspiration. One of my favorite ways to do this is by visiting the places that have inspired some of my favorite books.
Here are a few of my top picks for literary getaways:
1. Edinburgh, Scotland – Visit the city that inspired J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series. Explore the city’s winding cobblestone streets and visit the coffee shops where Rowling wrote many of her early drafts.
2. Oxford, England – Wander the halls of Oxford University, where many famous writers including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Lewis Carroll taught and were inspired to write their beloved stories.
3. Concord, Massachusetts – Take a trip to the small town that inspired many of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” stories. Visit Alcott’s family home, which is now a museum, and walk through the picturesque New England setting that provided the backdrop for some of literature’s most enduring characters.
4. Havana, Cuba – Ernest Hemingway’s love affair with Cuba is well-documented, and a visit to the city he called home for many years is sure to inspire any aspiring writer. Follow in Hemingway’s footsteps and visit the bars and cafes he frequented, or take a tour of his island home, the Finca Vigía.
5. Paris, France – No list of literary getaways would be complete without mentioning the City of Light. Walk in the footsteps of famed writers like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and James Joyce as you explore the city’s many cafes, bookshops, and literary landmarks.
Whether you’re a fan of classic literature or contemporary bestsellers, there’s no shortage of literary inspiration to be found in the places that have inspired some of our favorite books. So why not plan your next vacation around a visit to one of these iconic literary destinations?
