When we visit museums, historic sites, or other cultural institutions, we often admire the exhibits and artifacts without giving much thought to the work that goes on behind the scenes. Heritage professionals are the individuals responsible for preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, and their work involves much more than what meets the eye.

Conservators are responsible for the preservation and restoration of historical artifacts and artwork. They use a wide range of techniques and materials to repair and protect these objects so that they can continue to be appreciated by future generations.

Curators are responsible for the development and management of collections within cultural institutions. They ensure that the objects on display are properly researched, interpreted, and displayed in a way that will engage and educate visitors.

Archivists are responsible for the preservation and access of historical documents and records. They manage archives and libraries that house materials such as letters, photographs, and manuscripts, taking care to ensure that these materials are properly stored and cataloged.

Perhaps less visible than the conservation, curation and archiving fields, but equally important, is the work of the heritage educator who crafts programming and learning opportunities to engage visitors with their cultural heritage. This may range from give talks and tours, to workshops and activities designed to help visitors experience the culture and history first hand.

Despite the importance of their work, heritage professionals often work behind the scenes and may go largely unnoticed. However, their contributions are vital for the preservation and promotion of our cultural heritage, and they deserve our recognition and appreciation. Next time you visit a museum or cultural institution, take a moment to consider the incredible work that goes into creating the exhibits and preserving our cultural history.
