As humans, we all have different customs and traditions unique to our culture. These customs have been passed down from generation to generation and are deeply ingrained in our society. Exploring customs around the world has become increasingly important as globalization continues to bring us closer together.
In Japan, it is customary for individuals to remove their shoes before entering someone’s home. This is a sign of respect and cleanliness, as outdoor shoes can bring dirt and bacteria into the home. Conversely, in many Middle Eastern countries, it is custom to leave your shoes on when entering someone’s home. This is due to the fact that shoes are seen as protecting the wearer from the ground, which is often hot and dirty.
In France, it is customary to greet someone with a kiss on each cheek, even if you are meeting them for the first time. This is considered polite and a sign of respect and greeting. In many Asian countries, however, greeting someone with a bow is customary.
In South Africa, it is custom to use hand gestures during conversation. Gesturing with your hands enhances the message you are conveying and is considered polite. In many Western countries, however, using your hands while speaking is often seen as overbearing and impolite.
Customs and traditions are what make each culture unique and fascinating. When we take the time to understand and appreciate the customs of others, we open ourselves up to a world of new experiences and perspectives.
