The Evolution of Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board

The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) was established in 1966 with the aim of regulating and supervising the secondary education system in Karnataka. Since its inception, KSEEB has come a long way in ensuring the quality and uniformity of education in the state. In this article, we will take a closer look at the evolution of KSEEB over the years.

Formation of KSEEB

Prior to the formation of KSEEB, the responsibility of regulating secondary education was under the jurisdiction of the University of Mysore. However, due to the increase in the number of schools and students, the university found it challenging to manage the entire education system. Hence, in 1966, KSEEB was formed.

Functions of KSEEB

The primary functions of KSEEB include conducting the SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) examination, prescribing syllabus and textbooks for SSLC, and providing recognition to schools that follow the board’s regulations. KSEEB also conducts the departmental exams for various courses like D.Ed (Diploma in Education).

Reforms introduced by KSEEB

Over the years, KSEEB has introduced various reforms in the education system. In 1987, the board introduced the Grading System for SSLC exams, which replaced the traditional marking system. The grading system was well-received by students and parents as it ensured that students were graded based on their performance, and not just on their ability to reproduce answers.

In 2001, the board introduced the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system, which focused on assessing a student’s performance throughout the year via various tests and assignments. This system aimed to reduce the stress on students during the final exams and provide a more holistic evaluation of a student’s performance.

Adaptation to technology

In recent years, KSEEB has been proactive in adapting to technology. In 2008, the board introduced online processing of applications for SSLC exams and the online declaration of results. In 2014, KSEEB launched the Mobile App for SSLC students, which provides them with results and important notifications.

In 2020, when the world was hit by the pandemic, KSEEB became one of the first education boards in India to conduct the SSLC exams online. This move was welcomed by students and parents, as it ensured that students could appear for their exams safely from their homes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, KSEEB has come a long way since its formation in 1966. The board has made significant contributions to the secondary education system in Karnataka, with various reforms and adaptations to technology. KSEEB has set a benchmark in maintaining the quality and uniformity of education, which has resulted in producing competent and skilled individuals who have made valuable contributions to society.
