The Evolution of Columbine Health Systems: From Humble Beginnings to a Leading Healthcare Provider

Columbine Health Systems is a privately held healthcare company based in Colorado, USA. It has a remarkable history that dates back to the early 1970s when Bob Wilson, a registered nurse, and his wife Kitty Wilson, a physical therapist, established a home health agency in Fort Collins.

Over the years, Columbine Health Systems has grown to become a leading healthcare provider in Northern Colorado with eight different facilities. Its services include home health care, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, hospice, and palliative care. The company has a total of 1150 employees and serves more than 1500 patients annually.

The Early Days

Bob and Kitty Wilson started their healthcare journey when they realized that there was a need for healthcare services in rural areas. The Wilsons began by providing physical therapy and home health care services to rural communities in the surrounding region.

In 1988, the Wilsons decided to expand their services by opening the first assisted living facility in Colorado. They called the facility Columbine House, and it quickly gained popularity, attracting residents from across the state.

The Growth Years

The early 1990s saw Columbine Health Systems open a new facility called Centre Avenue Health & Rehab. The facility provided rehabilitation services for patients recovering from surgeries and injuries. This new facility marked the company’s move into the rehabilitation and long-term care sectors.

In 1998, Columbine Health Systems continued to expand its services by opening the first memory care facility, Columbine Commons. This new facility provided specialized care for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s, a service that was needed in Northern Colorado.

In 2004, Columbine Health Systems added home hospice and palliative care to its list of services. The new services were aimed at providing compassionate care for patients at home, a service that was mostly unavailable in the region.

The Present Day

Today, Columbine Health Systems is one of the largest privately held healthcare providers in Northern Colorado. It has a total of eight facilities, including three assisted living facilities, two rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities, one memory care facility, and two home health and hospice facilities.

Columbine Health Systems has won many awards for its excellent services, including the prestigious Best Workplaces for Aging Services award from Forbes in 2018 and 2019.

Conclusion

Columbine Health Systems has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Its founders, Bob and Kitty Wilson, started a home health agency to provide healthcare services to remote communities, and over the years, the company has expanded its services to accommodate the growing needs of the Northern Colorado population.

Today, Columbine Health Systems is a leading healthcare provider with a reputation for excellence in care and services. The company continues to grow and is dedicated to providing quality healthcare services to the people it serves.
