Europe is a continent full of wonders and there is no shortage of hidden gems to explore. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to travel across many countries and experience the uniqueness that each one has to offer. In this travel diary, I will be sharing some of my experiences exploring the hidden gems of Europe.
One of my favorite hidden gems in Europe is Rila Monastery in Bulgaria. Nestled in the Rila Mountains, this stunning monastery dates back to the 10th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The intricate frescoes that cover the walls of the monastery’s church are a sight to behold and the surrounding mountains make for a breathtaking backdrop.
Moving on to Croatia, the town of Rovinj on the Istrian peninsula is another hidden gem that is not to be missed. With its narrow streets, colorful houses and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, Rovinj offers visitors a taste of the Mediterranean lifestyle without the crowds of other popular destinations.
Further east, the city of Lviv in Ukraine is another hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Located in the western part of the country, Lviv is a cultural hub with a rich history and stunning architecture. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to beautiful churches, museums and galleries.
In the north of Europe lies the small island of Kalsoy in the Faroe Islands. This remote island is only accessible by ferry and is home to some of the most stunning views in the world. The hike to the Kallur lighthouse is a must-do activity for visitors and the rugged landscape of the island offers a sense of adventure and isolation.
Last but not least, the Scottish Highlands offer visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and experience the natural beauty of the country. The Isle of Skye in particular is a must-visit destination with its stunning landscapes, fairy pools, and picturesque villages.
These are just a few of the hidden gems that Europe has to offer. Exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations can offer a unique and authentic travel experience that is sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
