Understanding the Process of Information Processing Memory

Sensory Memory

Working Memory

Working memory is a type of short-term memory that involves active manipulation of information. This means that we are not simply holding onto information in our heads, but we are also actively using it to solve problems or complete tasks. Examples of working memory include mental math or following multi-step instructions.

Long-Term Memory

Finally, information that is deemed important enough in short-term or working memory moves into long-term memory. This type of memory can last for hours, days, or even a lifetime. Long-term memory is also aided by repetition and association. For example, if you repeatedly study for an exam, the information is more likely to stick in your long-term memory. Additionally, associating new information with information you already know makes it easier to remember.
