Exploring the 5 Stages of Cultural Competence in the Workplace

As businesses expand their reach to global markets, it is no longer sufficient for them to specialize solely on business strategy and operations. As companies grow, they need to understand the unique needs and preferences of their clients, customers, and employees who come from diverse backgrounds. This is where cultural competence comes into play.

Cultural competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and effectively interact with people from diverse cultures. In the workplace, cultural competence is critical to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment. The following are the five stages of cultural competence and how they are manifested in the workplace.

Stage 1: Cultural Destructiveness

In this stage, the workplace culture actively discriminates against individuals of different cultures. There is a lack of understanding and appreciation for diversity, leading to negative attitudes towards anyone who is different. The institution may show patterns of repressing, attacking, or undermining the cultures of non-dominant stakeholders.

One way of addressing cultural destructiveness is by creating a company policy that promotes cultural sensitivity. This policy should encourage employees to learn about and appreciate different cultures, as well as provide training to recognize and deter cultural destructiveness.

Stage 2: Cultural Incapacity

In this stage, although the company may not actively discriminate against individuals from different cultures, lack of awareness or exposure to cultural differences can lead to insensitive or unintentional discriminatory behavior. The company is said to lack the skill and resources to effectively cater to people from different cultures.

To overcome cultural incapacity, companies can provide cultural diversity competency training to their employees. It is also beneficial for the company to develop a diverse recruitment and retention policy.

Stage 3: Cultural Blindness

In this stage, companies fail to recognize the importance of culture in the workplace. They consider everyone the same, negating the importance of cultural differences. By ignoring cultural differences, the company fails to cater to the unique needs of different cultures within their workforce.

To address cultural blindness, companies can adopt a colorblind policy encouraging their employees to recognize and appreciate cultural similarities and differences. Companies need to promote diversity and cultural competence by training staff to understand cultural nuances and still be efficient in their duties when interacting with diverse cultures.

Stage 4: Cultural Pre-competence

In this stage, the company acknowledges the importance of culture and diversity and takes steps to address the issue. The company-hires and implements policies that seek to diversify the workforce and create an inclusive work environment.

To overcome cultural pre-competence, the company can offer staff training regarding cultural differences, establishing an employee resource group, and implementing an affirmative action plan.

Stage 5: Cultural Competence

In this stage, the company understands the importance of cultural competence and strives to incorporate diversity and inclusivity into every aspect of the work environment. This takes a deep understanding of the customs and norms of different cultures, coupled with an inclusive work environment.

To achieve cultural competence, companies can make diversity a part of their core values, implement a robust employee diversity training program, and establish a communication policy that encourages and embraces differences.

In conclusion, it is vital for companies to embrace cultural competence not only because of the benefits it brings to their business but also because it is a moral obligation. By embracing this expansive culture, companies are poised for growth as they create a thriving, vibrant, and diverse working environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and appreciated.
