Exploring My Cultural Identity: How Mexico Shaped My Sense of Belonging

Growing up amidst an amalgamation of mixed cultures, one’s identity tends to become a melting pot of various traditions and etiquettes. But, the cultural richness has its roots deeper than what we outwardly see. It often shapes us in ways we can’t imagine. In this article, we will explore the impact of the Mexican cultural milieu on my sense of belonging.

Background

My parents immigrated to the United States of America from Mexico before I was born. They wanted me to embrace both cultures – my heritage and my home. It was a conscious effort on their part to expose me to the richness of their roots to imbibe in me a sense of pride for my identity.

Family Values and Traditions

Growing up, my parents instilled in me the values of hard work, determination, and respect for one’s culture. My family celebrated Mexican holidays such as Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos with great fervor. We would come together as a family to cook traditional Mexican dishes that were passed down through generations. The rituals and traditions from my culture that my parents introduced me to shaped my upbringing and gave me a sense of belonging, even while living in a foreign land.

Language and Communication

My parents never compromised on maintaining the Spanish language in our household. Growing up bilingual has been a tremendous asset in my life. Even when I interact with people who speak Spanish, I am able to communicate easily, making them feel comfortable. The language I grew up speaking has played a significant role in shaping my identity and the way I communicate with others.

Cultural Identity

Mexico has a vibrant and diverse cultural heritage, and I am immensely proud of being a part of it. The music, the food, the literature, and the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation have played a significant role in shaping my identity and the way I perceive the world.

Conclusion

In conclusion, exploring my cultural identity has been a journey that has helped me learn more about myself and what I stand for. The impact of my Mexican culture on me has been profound, and it has given me a sense of identity and belonging that I will always cherish. The experience has taught me that the richness of one’s culture is something to be celebrated and passed down from generation to generation.
