We are social creatures, and as such, our behavior is largely shaped by societal norms. Norms are a set of rules that determine how we behave in certain situations. They serve as a guide and ensure that we uphold the values and beliefs of our society. Interestingly, there are five types of norms that govern our behavior, and in this article, we will discover what they are and how they impact our lives.

1. Folkways:

Folkways are the everyday norms that govern our behavior. They are the things we do without thinking twice about them, such as shaking hands with someone when we meet them or saying “thank you” after receiving a compliment. These norms are not strict and do not have consequences if they are violated.

2. Mores:

Mores are stricter than folkways and carry a more significant consequence if violated. They are the moral norms that govern our behavior and guide individuals in societies. Examples of mores include not cheating on your partner, not stealing, and not committing any form of crime. These norms are enforced by the community through punishment or social isolation.

3. Taboo:

Taboo norms are the most severe forms of norms, characterized by strong disapproval and importance in society. They are beliefs that are forbidden or are considered inappropriate in a given society. Taboos can vary by culture and country, from not talking about religion or politics in public to social or physical interactions with certain people considered impure or offensive. Violating a taboo is considered morally reprehensible and carries severe consequences.

4. Laws:

Laws are norms that are legally enforced by the government of a society. These norms exist in written forms and are upheld by the rule of law. They are set up to ensure proper behavior in society and guide how people must act. Disobeying the written laws often leads to punishment by the court of law.

5. Sanctions:

Sanctions are informal norms defined by the social setting. They are created to define and reinforce respect for the norms in society. Sanctions can come in various forms, including rewards, disapproval, rebuke, or punishment. These norms ensure that people stay in line with the community’s expectations.

In conclusion, norms govern our behavior from the way we dress, to how we communicate and interact with other people. Without norms, society would be chaotic and anarchic. Society has created those norms and made them a part of social identity, and it is crucial to maintain and respect them. Understanding the five types of norms mentioned in this article is essential to navigate society’s expectations. As such, it is necessary to align our personal behavior with the established norms while still being authentic to ourselves.
