When we think of wellness, we often think of physical health. However, wellness is much more than that, encompassing eight areas that together make up our whole selves. Understanding these eight areas can help us to lead more fulfilling lives that meet our needs and promote our overall wellbeing.

The first area of wellness is physical. This includes our physical health, but also our ability to take care of our physical needs such as sleep, exercise, and adequate nutrition. Taking care of our physical selves not only promotes vitality and energy but also impacts our emotional and mental wellbeing.

The second area of wellness is emotional. This involves regulating our emotions, managing stress, and having healthy coping mechanisms. Emotional wellness is important because it affects how we feel about ourselves, our relationships, and ultimately all areas of our lives.

The third area of wellness is intellectual. This involves continuing to learn and grow, having intellectual curiosity, and challenging ourselves mentally. Intellectual wellness allows us to engage with and understand the world around us and to experience personal growth.

The fourth area of wellness is spiritual. This involves our values and beliefs, finding purpose and meaning in life, and connecting with something larger than ourselves. Spiritual wellness can promote feelings of interconnectedness and peace.

The fifth area of wellness is social. This includes our relationships with others, our ability to communicate effectively, and our sense of community. Social wellness promotes a sense of belonging, empathy, and support.

The sixth area of wellness is occupational. This involves finding meaning and fulfillment in our work and career, feeling a sense of purpose, and achieving a work-life balance. Occupational wellness can promote a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, and professional growth.

The seventh area of wellness is financial. This involves effectively managing our finances, having financial security, and feeling confident in our ability to plan for the future. Financial wellness can promote feelings of stability and security.

The eighth and final area of wellness is environmental. This involves our surroundings and the impact they have on our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Environmental wellness involves being aware of our impact on the earth and taking steps to promote sustainable living.

Understanding these eight areas of wellness allows us to take a holistic approach to our lives, ensuring that we meet all of our needs to promote overall wellbeing. By recognizing our strengths and areas for improvement in each area, we can work towards leading more fulfilling and balanced lives.
