The Dobbs vs Jackson Case: A Wake-Up Call for Women’s Health Organizations

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could have a significant effect on women’s right to access abortion. The case, Dobbs vs Jackson Women’s Health Organization, centers on a Mississippi law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The state argues that the law is necessary to protect fetal life, while reproductive rights advocates see it as a direct challenge to the landmark 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.

The case highlights a larger issue facing women’s health organizations: the need to stay vigilant and proactive in the face of ongoing attempts to roll back reproductive rights. Over the past few years, numerous states have enacted restrictive abortion laws aimed at making it harder for women to access the care they need. These attacks on reproductive freedom threaten not only women’s health but also their economic stability, educational opportunities, and overall quality of life.

Women’s health organizations must take action to protect women’s reproductive rights in the face of these threats. They should work to increase public awareness of the importance of abortion access and the harm caused by restrictive laws. These organizations should also advocate for policies that protect and expand women’s access to reproductive healthcare services, such as comprehensive sex education, contraceptive coverage, and healthcare insurance that covers abortion.

At the same time, women’s health organizations must also strive to better serve marginalized communities, such as low-income women, women of color, and LGBTQ+ women. These women often face additional barriers to accessing healthcare, including unequal pay, lack of transportation, and discrimination from healthcare providers. Women’s health organizations should take a holistic and intersectional approach to serving these communities, providing culturally competent care and working to reduce the systemic barriers they face.

The Dobbs vs Jackson case serves as a reminder that we cannot take our reproductive rights for granted. Women’s health organizations must continue to fight for the right to access safe, legal abortion, as well as other critical reproductive healthcare services. By staying vigilant and proactive, and by working to support all women—especially those facing the most significant barriers—we can protect women’s health, safety, and dignity.
