The phrase “lean not on your own understanding” appears in Proverbs 3:5-6 and has become a common reference among many believers. But what does it really mean to lean on something other than our own understanding, and why is this important in our relationship with God?

At its core, “lean not on your own understanding” is a reminder to trust in God and not to rely solely on our own human understanding or wisdom. This goes against the natural inclination of most people who often seek to rely on their own intellect, reason, and logic to solve problems and make decisions.

However, the Bible teaches us that human understanding, while valuable, is limited and flawed. Proverbs 28:26 states that “he who trusts in his own heart is a fool,” reminding us that our own desires and emotions can cloud our judgment and may not always align with God’s will.

By contrast, God’s understanding and wisdom are infinite and perfect. In Isaiah 55:8-9, God declares that His thoughts are higher than ours and His ways are beyond our understanding. Therefore, when we lean on God and trust in His wisdom, we are acknowledging our reliance on Him and recognizing His sovereignty in our lives.

This concept of trusting in God rather than our own understanding is not just limited to making decisions or problem-solving. It also applies to our overall approach to life. In 2 Corinthians 5:7, we are told to walk by faith and not by sight, indicating that our walk with God should not be based solely on what we can perceive through our physical senses.

In practical terms, this means seeking God’s will in all areas of our lives, including relationships, careers, and even our daily routines. Rather than relying on our own understanding, we should seek His guidance through prayer, reading Scripture, and seeking wise counsel from fellow believers.

In conclusion, the phrase “lean not on your own understanding” serves as a powerful reminder for believers to trust in God and His infinite wisdom, rather than relying solely on our own intellectual capacity. By acknowledging our dependence on Him, we are able to align our will with His, and experience the fullness of His blessings and guidance in our lives.
