In the business world, we are usually accustomed to identifying and competing against our direct competitors. These are companies that offer the same products or services, target the same customer segment, and have a similar business model to ours. We invest a lot of time and resources trying to outdo them, whether it be through advertising, pricing strategy, or innovation.

But have you ever stopped to think about indirect competition? These are companies or products that, at first glance, might not seem to have any connection to your business. However, upon closer inspection, you realize that they are competing for the same scarce resources that you are.

For example, let’s say you own a high-end restaurant. Your direct competitors might be other high-end restaurants in the same area. But your indirect competitors could include fast food chains, food trucks, or even grocery stores that sell ready-to-eat meals. These options may be more affordable or convenient for some customers, which means they may choose to spend their money there instead of at your restaurant.

Understanding indirect competition is essential for any business owner as it gives a new perspective on the market and better comprehension of the wishes of the customer. To do this, you need to take a step back and look at your business from your customers’ eyes. Assess all the alternative options that your customers have beyond what you offer. This may include identifying alternatives to your product or service that suit other customer preferences, allowing you to understand and cater to those audiences in a way that potentially gives you an edge over your direct competitors.

By identifying and understanding indirect competition for your business, you’ll be better positioned to refine your business model and thrive in the market. It’s worth looking beyond just your direct competitors to find new opportunities that will benefit your business in the short and long-term.
