Korea is a wonderous country filled with fascinating culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes. While people are familiar with several of the country’s famous attractions, such as the gorgeous Jeju Island or the bustling capital city of Seoul, there is a treasure trove of hidden cultural gems that are not well-known by outsiders.

Many of these secret jewels are Korea’s hidden World Heritage sites. The UNESCO-listed Korean World Heritage Sites are famous, including Changdeokgung Palace, Jongmyo Shrine, and Gyeongju Historic Areas. However, there are additionally lesser-known but equally beautiful sites, including the stunning Baekje Historic Areas, the lyrical Sansa Buddhist Temple, and the well-preserved Hwaseong Fortress.

The Baekje Historic Areas encompass the Gongju city area and the Byzantine cultural area. Gongju is a small city that holds significant historical importance as it was the capital of the Baekje Dynasty of ancient Korea. The remains of the capital city contain enormous treasures that reveal Baekje’s early history and culture. The Byzantine cultural area is an exceptional example of Baekje’s active overseas and international trade in the 6th century.

The Sansa Buddhist Temple site recognizes Korea’s prominent religious heritage. The Sansa site includes seven mountainside Buddhist monasteries, which display a wide range of architectural styles characteristic of Korea Buddhist temples. The temples reflect the significant characteristics of Buddhist architecture in Korea and demonstrate the development and practice of Korean Buddhism.

Finally, the Hwaseong Fortress located in Suwon, near Seoul, is another hidden World Heritage treasure. Constructed from 1794 to 1796, this fortress is an impressive architectural creation that provides a glimpse into Korean military technology from the Joseon Dynasty era.

In conclusion, Korea has a wealth of hidden World Heritage sites that are easily overlooked by international visitors. These treasures shed light on the country’s rich culture, history, and architecture. Next time you’re in Korea, be sure to make a visit to some of these beautiful sites, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and experience the true wonders of Korea’s cultural heritage.
