Most people use the words intelligence and smartness interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. You could be smart, but not intelligent, or vice versa. Understanding the difference between the two can help us develop a better appreciation of our own skillset, and help us navigate the world around us.

Intelligence is best described as the ability to acquire new knowledge and skills easily. It is measured by IQ tests, which give an indication of a person’s cognitive abilities. It is possible to be highly intelligent and not be ‘street smart’ in terms of common sense knowledge.

Smartness is best described as the ability to use existing knowledge and skills in a way that benefits you in various situations. It is not only about knowing things, but also about being able to apply that knowledge in a practical way. Smartness is also sometimes referred to as ‘emotional intelligence’ which captures the ability to read between the lines and pick up on emotional cues from other people.

As you can see, the distinction between intelligence and smartness is all about how we use what we know. Intelligence is more about learning and processing information, whereas smartness is about using that intelligence to solve problems and make good decisions.

It’s important to remember that being intelligent or smart is not enough, irrespective of our cognitive abilities. The ability to communicate effectively, manage relationships, respond to others in a supportive manner, and show empathy are all fundamental components of success in life. In this sense, intelligence or smartness is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for success.

In the workplace, we encounter individuals who are both intelligent and smart, who are capable of solving difficult problems and making decisions efficiently. However, we also come across people who are lacking in either intelligence or smartness but can excel in other areas, such as creativity or empathy.

In conclusion, being smart and intelligent are both important, yet they are quite different in terms of definition and application. Smartness is a critical skill that helps us in various aspects of life, while intelligence allows us to learn and acquire new knowledge rapidly. To achieve success in our personal and professional lives, it is important to understand the difference between these terms and how they fit into our own skillset. By doing so, we can play to our strengths and apply our knowledge effectively in any given situation.
