Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort or stress a person experiences when they hold two or more contradicting beliefs, or when their beliefs and behaviors do not align. To ease the discomfort, people will often cling onto their beliefs and justify them, even when faced with evidence that counters them.

One reason we hold onto beliefs, even when they’re wrong, is because they provide us with a sense of certainty and control. Abandoning a belief that we’ve held for a long time can be uncomfortable and disorienting, so we often avoid doing so.

Another reason is that our beliefs are often tied to our identity and self-worth. When someone challenges our beliefs, it can feel like a personal attack, leading us to become defensive and resist changing our minds.

Social pressure also plays a role in maintaining our beliefs, as we are often surrounded by people who hold similar beliefs to ourselves. These beliefs become reinforced through our social circles, making it difficult to let go of them.

So, how can we break free from holding onto beliefs that are incorrect? It starts with acknowledging our cognitive dissonance and being open to new information. Being willing to challenge our beliefs and examine why we hold them is crucial to forming accurate and informed opinions.

Reflecting on our beliefs and considering alternative viewpoints can help us to expand our perspective and be more open-minded. It’s important to remember that changing our beliefs isn’t a failure, it’s an opportunity for personal growth and learning.
