Exploring the Impact of Unit 6 Cultural Values on 2 Bac Students

Cultural values have always been a significant factor in shaping our personalities and defining our identity. They shape our beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. In Unit 6 of the International Baccalaureate program, cultural values are given special attention to impart important learnings to students. In this article, we explore the impact of Unit 6 cultural values on two International Baccalaureate students.

Body

To understand the impact of cultural values, let’s briefly summarize what Unit 6 covers. The primary aim of Unit 6 is to educate students about the diverse cultural values that exist, providing them with an understanding of the values prevalent in different cultures worldwide. Also, through this unit, students learn to appreciate and respect these values.

Under this unit, two Bac students who attended an international school in Singapore were given assignments to explore the culture and traditions of China and Japan. They interviewed people belonging to these cultures, which gave them a better understanding of the values that underpin these cultures.

The first student explored the Chinese culture and values. During the research process, he found that Chinese people give significant importance to collectivism. The Chinese culture values the respect towards elders and individuals with greater knowledge and experience. They also highly prioritize working in groups, and one’s commitment to family is also vital.

After completing the assignment, the student realized that his perception of individualism was prominent in contrast to the values of the Chinese culture. This assignment opened his mind to the bigger picture and allowed him to appreciate that this way of thinking influences social and political behavior, leading him to be more aware of cultural differences.

The second student who conducted the research on Japanese culture learned that patience and punctuality are the primary cultural values in Japan. With a culture that values harmony, keeping time is a crucial aspect. Moreover, the Japanese culture values respect to all people, and it is expected for people to refrain from being confrontational with others.

The research opened the second student’s eyes to the respect that exists in Japanese culture, both for others and for themselves. The understanding of time management and politeness instilled during this Unit can be applied in his life outside of school.

Conclusion

The exploration of different cultural values, as demonstrated by the two Bac students mentioned above, allows students to understand and appreciate cultural differences. The exchange of knowledge can foster international relations and eliminate prejudice against different cultures. Apart from this, students who engage in international programs like the International Baccalaureate program develop diverse skill sets such as problem-solving skills and intercultural communication skills that can aid their future career endeavors.

By incorporating cultural values and cultural appreciation into the International Baccalaureate program curriculum, students can learn to appreciate other cultures and use these skills to build better relations with people from other countries. Through this, students are not only developing academically but also becoming better-rounded citizens who have a global perspective.
