As I reflect on the events of September 11th, 2001, it still feels like yesterday. I was a senior at a high school in Washington DC, just a few miles from the Pentagon. When the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, we were all in disbelief. But as the second plane hit, we knew that this was something much bigger than we had ever imagined.

My school was quickly placed on lockdown, and we were asked to stay put in our classrooms until further notice. Panic set in as we started to hear news reports of other planes being hijacked, and we knew that we were not safe. It wasn’t until hours later that we were allowed to go home, but even then, the world had changed forever.

The days and weeks that followed were a blur. Our school lost several alumni, and it felt like everyone knew someone who had been affected by the attacks. The streets were filled with American flags, and people came together to support one another in ways that we had never seen before.

For me personally, 9/11 changed everything. I had always had a passion for international relations, but after witnessing the devastation that had occurred, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to making the world a better place. I went on to study political science and international relations in college, and have spent my career working in non-profit organizations that promote peace and understanding among different cultures.

But the effects of 9/11 weren’t just limited to my personal career goals. It changed the way that we see the world and interact with one another. The fear and suspicion that followed the attacks led to a rise in Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment, which has had lasting effects on our society. And the wars that were launched in response to the attacks have cost countless lives and billions of dollars.

As we approach the 20th anniversary of 9/11, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned, and how we can move forward as a society. We must continue to honor the memories of those who lost their lives, while also working towards a more peaceful and just world. We can’t let fear and hate win – instead, we must strive for understanding and compassion, both in our personal lives and on a global scale.

In conclusion, the events of 9/11 had a profound impact on my life and the world at large. It’s my hope that we can all take this moment to remember and honor those who were lost, while also working towards a brighter and more peaceful future. May we never forget the lessons that we learned on that fateful day.
