Pilates and yoga emerged as popular alternatives to traditional strength training exercises, and more specialized exercise equipment was developed, such as the elliptical trainer.

The 2010s brought a shift towards functional and bodyweight training, with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) becoming more popular.
