As a second-grade teacher, you know that kids need the opportunity to move and play outdoors. But did you know that taking the classroom outside can enhance learning, too? Here are ten engaging outdoor activities for 2nd graders that will help them learn while they play.
1. Nature Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of items for students to find on a nature scavenger hunt. This can include things like leaves of different shapes and colors, flowers, rocks, and sticks. Encourage students to work together and share their findings.
2. “I Spy” Nature Walk
Take a nature walk and play “I Spy.” For example, “I spy something green and leafy.” Encourage students to identify what you spy. This game helps students develop observation and communication skills.
3. Math in the Garden
Use garden beds to teach math concepts like measurement and multiplication. Have students measure the length and width of garden beds, calculate the area, and determine how much soil is needed.
4. Writing in the Outdoors
Bring journals outside and have students write about what they observe in nature. They can record details about animals or plants, or write about how they feel being outside.
5. Science Experiments
Take science experiments outside, where students can observe different aspects of nature. For example, have students observe and record changes in plants throughout the seasons.
6. Bird Watching
Set up bird feeders and have students keep a record of the different types of birds that come to eat. They can research the birds they see and learn about their environments and behaviors.
7. Garden Club
Start a garden club with your students. They can help plan the garden, plant seeds, and take care of the plants. This teaches them responsibility, teamwork, and the science of gardening.
8. Creative Outdoor Art
Take art class outside and let students create art using natural materials found in the area. They can build sculptures, make leaf rubbings, or make pressed flowers.
9. Physical Education
Use the outdoors for physical education. Have students run relays, play games like capture the flag, or practice yoga and meditation.
10. Social Studies in Nature
Take students on a guided walk through a local forest or park. Focus on teaching them about the local ecosystem, geography, and other aspects of the environment.
