As a soon-to-be mom, you’re probably itching for one last rousing road trip before your baby makes his or her grand entrance. While hitting the open road has become somewhat of a tradition for expectant moms, there’s a lot to consider when you’re 35 weeks pregnant. Here are our top 10 tips for a safe and comfortable road trip during your final stretch of pregnancy.

1. Pack Wisely

Make a list of all the essentials you might need for the days you’ll be on the road. This includes items like snacks, water bottles, plenty of pillows, comfortable clothing, and any medications you’re taking.

2. Check in with Your Doctor

Before you leave, be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor. They can check up on you, make sure you’re healthy, and provide you with any medical advice specific to your pregnancy.

3. Buckle Up

This goes without saying, but wear your seatbelt at all times while driving. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends wearing the lap belt below your belly and the shoulder belt across your chest, making sure both are snug but not too tight.

4. Move Around Frequently

It’s important to get up and stretch your legs at least once an hour to prevent blood clots and circulation problems. Take quick walks around gas stations or rest areas during those pitstops.

5. Stay Hydrated

Pregnancy often makes you feel like you need to pee even more frequently than normal, but staying hydrated is crucial nonetheless. Bring plenty of water and try to limit caffeine and sugary drinks.

6. Plan Your Route

Be mindful of how far you’re driving each day. Take frequent breaks and avoid driving in the hottest parts of the day, when you’re more likely to get tired or dehydrated.

7. Check Your Insurance

Make sure your car insurance and any roadside assistance programs are up to date. It’s also a good idea to check with your health insurance provider to make sure you’re covered while you’re on the road.

8. Sleep Comfortably

Bringing a pillow or two from home can help you get comfortable during long stretches in the car. If you’re camping or staying in a hotel, ask for extra pillows and try to get a room with a comfortable bed.

9. Snack Smartly

When it comes to snacking on the road, pack things that are easy and healthy, like fruit, nuts, and protein bars. Avoid salty snacks that can cause you to retain water.

10. Relax and Enjoy the Journey

While it can be tempting to focus solely on reaching your destination, try to take some time to enjoy the scenery and relax. You’re on vacation, after all!

A safe and comfortable road trip during the third trimester might take a little more effort, but it’s well worth it. By following these tips, you’re sure to have a memorable trip that you’ll remember fondly for years to come.
