As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder, National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) holds a special place in my heart. Eating disorders are complex illnesses that are often rooted in psychological, biological, and environmental factors. An eating disorder is not a choice, and it’s not a lifestyle. It’s a serious mental illness that can have devastating consequences if left untreated.

For me, my journey with an eating disorder began in my early teens. I struggled with anorexia nervosa, which is characterized by a distorted body image, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a refusal to maintain a healthy weight. That’s why NEDAW is so crucial. It’s an opportunity to start conversations, provide education, and advocate for better treatment options. It’s a time to remind those who are struggling that they are not alone and that help is available.
