3. The world’s first computer programmer was a woman named Ada Lovelace. She worked alongside Charles Babbage in the mid-1800s on what he called the “Analytical Engine.”

4. The first-ever functional digital camera was invented in 1975 by Steve Sasson, an engineer at Eastman Kodak. The camera weighed almost 4kg and took a grainy, black-and-white photo.

5. In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors on a microchip would double every two years. This prediction is now called “Moore’s law” and was accurate for many years until the last decade.

6. The first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973, by Martin Cooper, an engineer at Motorola. The call was made to a rival company, Bell Labs, and lasted only 20 seconds.

7. In 2006, an engineer named Neil Papworth sent the first-ever text message. It was sent from a computer and read “Merry Christmas.”

8. In 1971, an engineer named Ray Tomlinson sent the first-ever email. It was sent to himself and read “QWERTYUIOP.”

9. In 1993, the first-ever webcam was set up at Cambridge University. It was used to keep tabs on a coffee pot in the computer lab so that workers knew when to take a break.

10. In the early 2000s, a company called Robot Wars became popular in the UK. The show featured remote-controlled robots battling it out in an arena, much like a gladiator-style competition.
