The Negative Effects of Long-Term Keto on My Health
After years of trying different diets and lifestyle changes to improve my health, I stumbled upon the ketogenic diet. Its promise of fat loss, steady energy, and better mental clarity seemed too good to be true, but I was intrigued enough to give it a shot. Secondly, my thyroid function declined. As someone with a history of hypothyroidism, I monitored my thyroid levels regularly and noticed that my TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) tended to rise on keto. This was likely due to the low-carb and low-calorie nature of the diet, which could trigger stress responses in the body and reduce thyroid hormone production. I also experienced hair loss, dry skin, and cold intolerance, which are typical symptoms of hypothyroidism. While I tried to supplement with iodine, selenium, and other nutrients that support thyroid health, I found it hard to balance the benefits of keto with the risks to my thyroid.
Thirdly, my social life suffered. As someone who enjoys dining out, cooking for others, and trying new foods, I felt increasingly isolated and limited by keto. I had to decline invitations to restaurants, bring my own snacks to parties, and explain my dietary choices to skeptical friends and family members. I also found it hard to share meals with my partner, who was not on keto and preferred different foods. While I tried to focus on the health benefits of keto and the feeling of being in control of my diet, I missed the spontaneity and connection that food can bring to relationships and social events.
In conclusion, while keto may work well for some people in the short term, the negative effects of long-term keto on my health were significant and multifaceted. From gut troubles to thyroid issues to social limitations, I learned that the cost of being in ketosis was too high for me. I still believe in the power of diet to shape our health and wellness, but I also recognize the importance of balance, variety, and flexibility. Listening to my body, seeking guidance from experts, and learning from my experiences have been crucial in finding a diet that supports my long-term health and happiness.
