8 Languages Later: How Language Learning Changed My Life
Have you ever heard the phrase “travel broadens the mind”? Well, learning languages is like traveling to different worlds. Each language allows you to experience a new culture and way of thinking. As a language learner myself, I can attest to the profound impact language learning has had on my life. In this article, I will share my personal journey of language learning and how it has changed me for the better.
Starting with English, the universal language, I learnt it as a means of communication with people around the world in my teens. Later, through learning Spanish and French, I was able to travel to South America and France without relying on a translator. During my stay, I fully immersed myself in the language and culture, which helped me to understand the psyche of these countries better. Eventually, learning German and Chinese, I decided to leave my home country and take on new challenges in Germany and China, where fluency in the language was imperative. Learning these languages opened doors that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise, such as being able to work in different multinational corporations in foreign countries, having meaningful conversations with locals, and picking up the nuances of their culture.
Learning a new language not only broadens your horizons by exposing you to different cultures and perspectives, but it also has personal benefits. It enhances cognitive skills such as memory, improves problem-solving abilities, and boosts creativity. Furthermore, it opens up opportunities for travel and work, as multilingualism is an attribute many companies and employers look for. Being multilingual has made me stand out amongst my peers and given me an added advantage in business dealings and career prospects.
One case study that comes to mind is from my time working in China, where I was the only non-Asian in the team. My colleagues showed me immense respect and trust, even though I was a foreigner, because of my fluent Chinese. Learning their language broke down cultural barriers and united us on equal footing. It was a humbling experience that reiterated how languages can bring people together.
In conclusion, learning a new language is an adventure that transforms you both personally and professionally. It broadens your perspective, sharpens your mind, and opens doors to new horizons. Take it from somebody who has learnt eight languages and seen the world from different vantage points. In today’s integrated world, it’s never been a better time to learn a new language – it’s a skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life and benefit you in ways you can’t even imagine. Why not start your journey today?
