5 Unusual Cultural Norms from Around the World

What may seem perfectly normal in one culture may be incredibly bizarre or outright offensive in another. This is why traveling can be an eye-opening experience, exposing us to customs and norms that we never knew existed. Below are some of the most unusual cultural norms from around the world:

1. Kissing on the Cheek in France

In most countries, we reserve kisses for our romantic partners. However, in France, it’s common for people to greet each other with a kiss on both cheeks. Men even kiss each other on the cheek as a sign of a close friendship. The number of kisses varies depending on the region, but two is the most common.

2. Burping after a Meal in China

In many cultures, burping is considered rude, but not in China. Here, burping after a meal is seen as a sign of enjoyment and appreciation for the food. It’s even considered impolite if you don’t burp after a meal, indicating that you didn’t enjoy it.

3. Leaving Food on Your Plate in Japan

In Japan, leaving food on your plate is a good thing, indicating that you’ve had enough and appreciate the generosity of your host. Eating everything on your plate, on the other hand, might give the impression that you’re still hungry and your host will feel obligated to offer you more.

4. Not Tipping in Japan

In most countries, tipping is considered a standard practice, but in Japan, it’s viewed as insulting. The Japanese believe that offering good service is a basic expectation and tipping may imply that the server is not paid enough or that their service is not up to standard.

5. Nose to Nose Greetings in Maori Culture

The Maori people of New Zealand have a unique way of greeting each other, known as Hongi. This involves pressing noses together and inhaling, symbolizing the exchange of breath and sharing of the same spiritual essence. It’s a way of acknowledging each other’s mana (spiritual power) and connecting on a deeper level.

Traveling is an excellent way to broaden our horizons and learn about different cultures and customs. However, it’s essential to respect these norms and avoid criticizing them. Embracing diversity opens our minds to new perspectives and helps us appreciate the uniqueness of our world.
