According to the latest Health Youth Survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are some surprising findings regarding the health and lifestyle of American youth. The survey collects data from students in grades 6-12, providing valuable insight into the behaviors and attitudes influencing youth health. Here are 5 of the most intriguing findings from the most recent survey:

1. Vaping is on the rise amongst middle and high schoolers.

E-cigarettes, also known as vapes, have become increasingly popular amongst younger Americans, with more than 5 million middle and high school students reporting using them in the past 30 days. This represents a 27.5% increase from the previous year.

2. Mental health concerns are prevalent amongst American youth.

Mental health concerns have become a growing issue for young people over the past decade, and the latest survey shows that the trend is continuing. A significant percentage of students reported feeling sad or hopeless for two or more weeks, experiencing anxiety or depression, or having thoughts of suicide.

3. Drinking and drug use are decreasing.

While the prevalence of vaping is on the rise, drinking and illegal drug use amongst American youth has decreased. In fact, the percentage of high school students who reported using alcohol dropped by 3.3% from the previous year, and the use of other illicit drugs dropped by 2.8%.

4. Healthy eating habits are lagging.

According to the survey, American youth aren’t getting enough fruits and vegetables in their diets. An alarming 7 out of 10 high school students reported eating less than the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day.

5. Exercise habits vary by age and gender.

The survey found that boys are more likely than girls to engage in physical activity. Additionally, high school students are more likely to engage in regular exercise than middle school students. Thirty percent of high school students reported getting the recommended amount of physical activity each week, while only 16% of middle school students reported the same.

It’s clear from the survey data that there are both concerning and positive trends in the health and lifestyle of American youth. Parents, teachers, and healthcare providers alike can use this information to educate young people on healthy habits, promote physical activity and mental wellness, and work together to support youth health and well-being.
