By contrast, foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, such as sugar-sweetened beverages and processed snack foods, can contribute to weight gain and poor health outcomes. These foods are often referred to as empty calories.

By paying attention to your portion sizes and choosing nutrient-dense foods, you can achieve a healthy balance between energy intake and expenditure.
