10 Commonly Misspelled Words You Need to Know

Spelling can be a tricky business. From the many silent letters to the rules that seem to have more exceptions than adherences, it’s no wonder that even the most seasoned writers sometimes struggle with spelling. Fortunately, there are a few commonly misspelled words that you can easily master if you keep an eye out for them. Here are ten words that may be tripping you up:

1. Accommodate: Two Cs, two Ms.
2. Definitely: Not “definately” or “defiantly.” It’s most definitely spelled “definitely.”
3. Embarrass: Yes, there are two Rs and two Ss in this word.
4. Occurrence: Two Cs, two Rs – don’t worry too much, though, since the extra Rs are just there to make the word look fancy.
5. Separate: The trick to this one is remembering that “a rat” is in the middle, separate from the “e” at the end!
6. Their/There/They’re: Three different words, three different meanings. “Their” indicates possession, “there” refers to a place, and “they’re” is a contraction for “they are.”
7. Lose/Loose: “Lose” is a verb indicating the act of misplacing something or being defeated. “Loose” is an adjective meaning something is not tight or restrained.
8. Receive: Don’t forget the “I before E except after C” rule for this one! It’s “i” before “e” except after “c” or when it sounds like “a,” as in “weigh.”
9. A Lot: This is not “alot.” It’s two words.
10. Weird: No, it’s not “wierd.” It’s “weird.”

Mastery of these ten words alone will go a long way towards communicating your ideas clearly and expertly. Of course, there are many other words that can cause confusion, but by keeping an eye out for these common spelling mistakes, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the art of spelling. Keep pushing yourself to improve, and eventually, you’ll find yourself breezing through even the most challenging words!
