As a society, we often prioritize assimilation over celebrating our cultural roots. I used to be guilty of this myself, trying to distance myself from my ancestry in order to fit in. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize the importance of embracing my cultural roots.
Growing up, I was always aware of my mixed heritage. My mother is from a small town in Mexico, and my father’s family is Irish and Italian. However, I always felt like I didn’t quite fit in with any one culture. I wasn’t Mexican enough to be fully accepted by my mother’s side of the family, and I didn’t feel particularly connected to my father’s European ancestry.
It wasn’t until I started digging deeper into my family’s history that I began to feel a stronger sense of connection to my heritage. I learned about the struggles and triumphs of my ancestors, and I felt proud to be a part of their legacy. I started incorporating more traditional foods and customs into my life, and I found that it helped me feel more grounded and connected to my identity.
Of course, embracing my cultural roots hasn’t been without its challenges. There have been times when I’ve been made to feel like an outsider, or when I’ve struggled to navigate the complexities of being a mixed-race person in America. But ultimately, I’ve found that the benefits of embracing my heritage far outweigh any difficulties.
For me, embracing my cultural roots has meant learning more about where I come from, taking pride in my ancestry, and recognizing the unique perspective that it gives me on the world. I believe that each of us has a unique cultural heritage that should be celebrated and explored. By doing so, we can better understand ourselves and our place in the world.
